Paris 2024: The "Reverse" Side of the Medals

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games promise to be a landmark in the history of global sports, not just for the grandeur of the event but also for innovations that reflect a growing concern for sustainability and the preservation of cultural heritage. Their medals are a shining example of this innovative spirit.

Imagine the thrill of receiving a medal containing a piece of the iconic Eiffel Tower. It's undeniable that this idea is, at the very least, quite original. The proposal, which came from the Paris 2024 Athletes' Commission led by two-time Olympic champion Martin Fourcade, reflects this vision of transforming a piece of French history into something that athletes can take home. It highlights national pride while sending a powerful message about sustainability and heritage preservation.

Each medal, containing a piece of the original iron from the Eiffel Tower removed during the monument's renovations, is a genuine jewel of French history and culture. To bring this idea to life, Chaumet, the ingenious jeweler belonging to the luxury group LVMH known for transforming ordinary pieces into true gems, was invited. If one is to win a medal, let it be with art and a piece of Parisian history.

The design of these medals makes them a true work of art: to symbolize the geography of France, the medals are hexagonal and designed with subtle and elegant lines that add texture and shine, paying homage to French splendor and the athletes' Olympic performance. The six metal "appendages" that secure the piece of iron remind us of the famous rivets of the Eiffel Tower, a detail that enhances their beauty and meaning.

On the other hand, the ribbons of the medals, in dark blue for the Olympics or deep red for the Paralympics, are equally striking and inspired by the lattice of the Eiffel Tower. This choice of colors and textures is also a visual tribute to French history and architecture.

The reverse side of the medals, where the goddess of victory Athena Nike is depicted emerging from the Panathenaic Stadium along with the Eiffel Tower, are perfect final touches. The Paralympic medals, featuring an upward view of the Eiffel Tower and inscriptions in Braille, are also a touching tribute to inventor Louis Braille.

Winning one of these medals is like taking home a piece of Paris, with all the charm and elegance that only the "City of Lights" can offer. These medals are not just a trophy; they are true works of art and an example of the perfect fusion between innovation and sustainability, conveying immense respect for historical heritage.

Paris 2024 is showing the world that it is possible to honor tradition while embracing the future. This innovative approach not only pays tribute to the thousands of Olympic and Paralympic athletes but also inspires new generations to value culture and protect our planet. The medals of Paris 2024 are undoubtedly a symbol of national pride and a bold statement about how the grandeur of the Olympic Games can and should go hand in hand with environmental and cultural responsibility. Allez, Paris 2024!
